How we take a footprint impression in the soft clay.

Clay Imprints

Clay imprints allow us to capture the life size impression of hand, foot or even paw prints in clay. They can be personalised by shape and colour and you can choose what text to include such as name and age or date. The imprints can be hung unframed, using one of our adhesive plaque hooks, or you can have your imprints framed with your choice of complementary backboard.

Taking the prints

Capturing the perfect prints in the soft clay can be tricky but with so many years experience making precious keepsakes using hand, foot and paw prints, we've had plenty of practice! We have lots of tricks and techniques to help achieve the best possible impressions whether it be tiny baby feet or wriggly pup paws!

Bespoke and handmade

Once we've taken the prints we cut the clay to your required shape and size. It is then left to dry out naturally, before it’s first, high firing, in the kiln. Next we paint the imprints in your chosen colour, add the name and age or date and then glaze before a second kiln firing. At this point we can send it to our framer, who hand makes the frame to your specification or add an attachment, enabling it to be hung unframed. A lot of time and care goes into creating such precious keepsakes and clay imprints usually take approximately 6 weeks.

Best to book

Because of the time involved in the clay preparation which needs to be done in advance, clay imprints are done by appointment only. We ideally like to do them before lunchtime to allow drying time as we then need to cut them later in the day. We can take baby, child or adult prints most days but we always recommend calling ahead to book a convenient time, to avoid disappointment. For precious paw prints please contact us so we can discuss how and when we can best take the prints, depending on the animal.
